The calves of spring

Writer and “Wait, Wait, Don’t Tell Me!” panelist Tom Bodett had this to say today at his Twitter account:

80+ degrees today. Wearing shorts for first time this year. Stay clear. I can hardly stand to look at these legs myself.

I am, it goes without saying, quite a bit farther south than Mr. Bodett in Vermont, but this was also the first day I’ve been out and about in shorts. I walked to work and back today — something I often do on Saturdays — and, since the newspaper offices aren’t open to the public that day, we’re not subject to the normal dress code. It’s a gloriously warm day (85 — as warm as the tropical climate of Vermont) but also quite breezy. It’s a 20-25 minute walk each way from here to the newspaper, and quite a nice day for it.

No one, apparently, was close enough to be traumatized by the sight of my winter legs.

‘I would undoubtedly make a huge mess’

Tom Bodett, whom you may know from his Motel 6 commercials and whom I love as a panelist on “Wait, Wait, Don’t Tell Me!”, has a gracious offer for Gov. Blagojevich:

… I would like to be the answer to your Senate appointment problems. I have a clean history — politically speaking. While I have absolutely no governing skills or experience, certainly that presents no obstacle to office in the Land of Lincoln. I also would undoubtedly make a huge mess of things, so the good people of Illinois would not have to go through any troubling change ….

‘Wait, Wait’ headed for TV?

Peter Sagal and Tom Bodett have both blogged about the taping of this weekend’s Wait, Wait, Don’t Tell Me, which was supposed to be a triumphant reprise of a well-attended outdoor show from last year. Instead, it turned into a rain-soaked badge of honor for the faithful few who attended during a downpour. (Sagal even invoked my favorite bit of Shakespeare, the Agincourt speech from Shakespeare’s Henry V.)

I listened to the show this morning, and it is, in fact, a good one.

What neither man blogged about is the possibility that “Wait, Wait” may soon have a TV version.

Peter Sagal had a link at his blog to this fantastic Flickr photo set from last week’s taping of “Wait, Wait, Don’t Tell Me,” which was on the road in Connecticut. It includes great photos of everyone involved — Peter, Carl Kasell, guest star Jane Curtin, and panelists Roy Blount Jr., Roxanne Roberts and Tom (“We’ll leave the light on for ya”) Bodett.
