It’s on YouTube now, but here’s the link to the official 20th Century Fox site with the nice QuickTime trailers for another ill-advised attempt to remake a classic. I have to admit, the trailer is impressive, but …. why?

Creativity stood still
I am pretty sure there’s no actual need for a remake of one of the best science fiction movies ever made, “The Day The Earth Stood Still.” But that’s never stopped Hollywood. Anyway, Keanu Reeves is playing Klaatu. That sort of makes sense; Michael Rennie was very restrained in his performance, and Keanu will get to show his normal emotional range of A to B (well, he almost makes it to B). Now there’s a rumor that John Cleese is going to take the part of Dr. Barnhardt.
I guess I can reserve judgment on the movie; I just don’t see the need to remake it. Why not come up with some original story instead?
