I linked to the web site for the new “Sweeney Todd” movie a week or two ago, but my brother has pointed out to me that it’s now been completely reworked. As my brother surmised, I was less interested in the altered graphics and menus than the fact that songs from the movie play in the background, which gives you a chance to hear how Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter will sound in the roles.
I never saw Len Cariou, the first and supposedly definitive Sweeney, on Broadway; I did see his successor, George Hearn, in a performance with Angela Lansbury that was taped for cable but later aired on PBS. Hearn is how I was introduced to the play, and how I imagined the character all these years. Johnny Depp does not have Hearn’s deep voice; his Sweeney is obviously a different interpretation. But I have to say I was impressed.
