Important apple chip advisory

I made some banana chips a few weeks ago, but it’s been ages since I’ve made any apple chips.

Dehydrator-made apple chips are much better for you than store-bought apple chips. Look at the label, and you’ll find that most of the commercial banana or apple chips available (either by themselves or as part of some sort of trail mix) are either fried, or else sprayed with oil in order to get flavorings (like cinnamon) to stick to them. You assume that they’re a healthy snack, and they’re probably still better than some things, but you don’t really expect them to have as much fat as some of them have.

Well, I went to Subway for supper tonight and made a great discovery. Subway now offers a brand of apple chips called Snapz. These are dehydrated, not fried, and the only two ingredients are apples and lemon juice concentrate (not only to provide tartness, but to keep the apples from turning brown). They taste great – sweet and tart and apple-y – and they are, unlike the products described above, fat free. I’ll be looking for these in the stores, although what I really need to do is make some apple chips on my own in the dehydrator.
