I saw a TV ad for “Get Him To The Greek” last night and my immediate reaction was that it was just a modern-day, music-industry remake of a terrific movie, “My Favorite Year.”
In both movies, a young, low-level functionary (Jonah Hill in “Greek,” Mark Linn-Baker in “Year”) is assigned to baby-sit a troublesome, hard-living star (Russell Brand in “Greek,” Peter O’Toole in “Year”) and make sure that he gets to a live performance on time. One difference is that “My Favorite Year” all takes place in New York City, while Hill is tasked with transporting Brand from London to Los Angeles, adding a road-picture element.
It sounds, from the IMDb page, like “Get Him To The Greek” is a lot more vulgar and sex-obsessed than “My Favorite Year.” And while Russell Brand is a very funny man, he’s no Peter O’Toole. Then again, who is?
“Get Him To The Greek” also stars Sean “P. Diddy” Combs as Hill’s boss, a record company executive.
Seriously, if you’ve never seen “My Favorite Year,” search it out. It’s wonderful — set in the early days of live television, at a thinly-veiled fictional version of “Caesar’s Hour” or “Your Show of Shows.” Mark Linn-Baker’s character is the junior member of the writing staff, who must babysit Errol Flynn-like Alan Swann (O’Toole), a swashbuckling action hero who is past the peak of his popularity, perhaps because of a drinking problem. It’s a funny and upbeat movie.
