So, here it is: some other John Carney’s appearance on Letterman. Keep watching; it gets more and more impressive as it goes along.

Carney on Letterman
I’ve always wanted to see “Late Show with David Letterman” in person — once, I wrote a hundred postcards to enter a contest for a trip to see the show.
Sure enough, tonight John Carney will be at the Letterman show — not as an audience member but as a guest.
Unfortunately, it’s not me. Nor is it John Carney, the Delaware politician, or John Carney, the NFL kicker, or John Carney, the St. Louis radio host, or John Carney, the district attorney.
It’s this John Carney, who will appear as part of “close-up magic week.” Despite his mellifluous name, he’ll have a hard time topping Letterman favorite Jason Randal, who appeared Monday night.

I just saw a preview for Monday night’s “Two and a Half Men,” and I think I’m going to have to watch it, so that I can see … John Carney.
I’ve never actually seen Carney perform, only photos of him on his web site. I’ve posted before about people with whom I share a name, including Carney the magaician, as well as:
- An NFL kicker;
- The immediate past lieutenant governor of Delaware, who — after losing an election for governor last year — was strongly considered to replace Joe Biden in the Senate;
- A St. Louis radio personality — whose father was named Jack and was an even better-known radio personality. This one is particularly funny because my father goes by Jack and both of us have worked in local radio at one time or another.
- A district attorney in northern Middle Tennessee.
I’m not related to any of the other John Carneys in any way I know of. (Way back, of course, we’re probably all related somehow.)
Anyway, the “Two and a Half Men” episode apparently deals with Jon Cryer’s character having a birthday. In the promo, Cryer is shown saying something about wanting a magician at his party, and then I caught a glimpse of John Carney holding up playing cards as if doing a trick. I recognized John Carney immediately from his web site photos and caricatures.
As I said, I’ll have to tune in Monday and see him.
What’s in a name?
Joseph Biden had already qualified to run for re-election to his Delaware senate seat before he was picked as Barack Obama’s running mate, and he will remain on the ballot in that capacity.
According to Wikipedia, if he is elected to both positions, he would of course decline the Senate seat, and the governor of Delaware, Ruth Ann Minner, would appoint someone to serve for the next two years, until a special election. That appointee might be Biden’s son Beau, who introduced his father at the convention this week. But if Beau Biden’s National Guard service in Iraq makes that inappropriate, Wikipedia suggests that the governor might instead appoint whichever candidate loses the Democratic primary for governor next month. There are two candidates, one of whom is the lieutenant governor of Delaware, the honorable John Carney. He’s no relation, but it might make for some fun newspaper headlines, bumper stickers, etc., for me to collect.
As I’ve posted here before, there’s also an NFL kicker named John Carney, as well as a magician and a St. Louis radio host. The St. Louis radio John Carney is of particular interest to me — and I swapped e-mail with him some years back — because he is the son of a legendary St. Louis broadcaster who was named Jack Carney. Well, my father is named Jack, and both of us have worked in small-town radio at some point in our careers!
A bit closer to home, there’s a district attorney in Clarksville named John Carney — no relation. I’ve met several friends of his; one of our former circuit judges here in Bedford County had served alongside that John Carney as a TBI agent. At one point, that John Carney was in line to become director of the TBI.
