Jeremy

It used to be, in the great old days of “The Tonight Show starring Johnny Carson,” if they came back after the first commercial break and it was Ed McMahon, rather than Johnny, addressing the camera, one felt a certain excitement. That meant that Carson was about to do one of his characters – perhaps Art Fern, Aunt Blabby or Floyd R. Turbo, American. If we were really, really lucky, it would be time for a visit by that seer, sage, soothsayer Carnac the Magnificent.

Anyway, it’s now a similar kind of good sign when “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon” comes back from commercial and announcer/sidekick Steve Higgins is addressing the camera. It means Jimmy Fallon is getting ready to do one of his musical impersonations. Like, for example, this:

Born to glee

Here, in an abridged form, is the hysterical opening of tonight’s Emmycast. In the interest of comedy, I will forgive the desecration of the greatest rock and roll song of all time.

Look for Emmy host Jimmy Fallon, cast members from “Glee” (including Jane Lynch), Tina Fey, Jon Hamm, Betty White, Joel McHale, Tim Gunn, Jorge Garcia and Randy Jackson, among others.

Strangely, they omit the setup – Jimmy arrives for the Emmys and sees the “Glee” kids hanging around outside the theater. They can’t afford tickets for the show. But what if they could win the big cash prize from a conveniently-upcoming glee club competition?

BriWi slow jams the news

One of the funniest recurring bits on “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon” is “Slow Jam The News,” which Jimmy and his incredible house band, The Roots, premiered on their very first episode. Friday night, Jimmy slow jammed the news with a special, news-aware celebrity guest:

Williams has a great sense of humor, as you know if you’ve seen his frequent appearances as a guest on “The Daily Show” or the time he guest-hosted “Saturday Night Live.”

I wish it was Christmas today

Back when Jimmy Fallon was on “Saturday Night Live,” there was a little holiday tradition whereby he, Chris Kattan, Horatio Sanz and Tracy Morgan would perform a goofy little Christmas song Jimmy had written entitled “I Wish It Was Christmas Today.”

Jimmy talked about the song’s origin on Monday night’s “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon,” and about how startled he was when Julian Casablancas of The Strokes wanted to cover the song.

Well, Julian Casablancas was on “Late Night” Monday, and performed the song along with Jimmy and Horatio Sanz, and backed up by The Roots, the show’s house band. Even though I’d read that Horatio was going to be on the show, I didn’t recognize him when he appeared; he has lost massive amounts of weight since his SNL days.

I can’t wait for Letterman on Wednesday; he always has Darlene Love on his last show before Christmas, to sing “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home).”

I hope Neil Young will remember

Well, I’m back at work today — I don’t feel good, but I feel better than I did yesterday.

One thing I watched from my DVR yesterday was the previous night’s “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon,” which included what I thought was a brilliant segment: Jimmy’s dead-solid-perfect impression of Neil Young singing a TV theme song. Share and enjoy:

‘Bri-Wi’ and Jimmy

Brian Williams of “NBC Nightly News” is a fine journalist, but he’s also demonstrated his sense of humor as a guest on “The Daily Show,” “Saturday Night Live,” and other venues.
I just got around to watching Thursday night’s “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon,” and Williams was particularly funny, barely letting a delighted Fallon get a word in edgewise. Here’s a portion of the interview:
