My favorite thing about “The Sting” – SPOILER

Do not read this post if you haven’t seen “The Sting,” one of my all-time favorite movies, which aired on TCM tonight.

…. spoiler ….

I don’t know whether it was the second time I saw the movie that I noticed this, but on the morning of the big sting you see Robert Redford’s character, Johnny Hooker, reach into his mouth while he’s getting dressed for the big day. The first time you see the movie, you think nothing of it. Does he have dental work? Is it some sort of weird 1930s period detail?

But at some point, once you know what’s coming, you realize what he is doing – he is putting the blood capsule into his cheek, so that he can bite down on it at the appropriate time. That’s what I love about this movie: the filmmakers are so sure that they have you on the hook (and they do!) that they can show you something like this and know that you won’t give it a second thought.  But then, on repeat viewings, it’s there as a little Easter egg for you to find.

What a great movie.

  1. If it is coming on again soon, would you let me know? I would love to watch it!

  2. TCM’s web site shows the next airing being Thursday, Feb. 7 at 9:45 p.m. our time.

  3. Thanks!! I’m debating just buying it on DVD. I have never seen it, but I’d love to!
