As those of you know who follow me on Twitter and/or Facebook, I was without Internet access Monday night. I called AT&T’s tech support line and got a recorded message saying the problem would be fixed by 9:54 or some other weird, arbitrary time (this was at, maybe, 6 or 7 in the evening). Later, I called back and got a recorded message saying the problem would be fixed by 11:54. They did warn that when it was fixed, you might need to reset your modem, reboot your computer or what have you.
Well, the DSL still wasn’t working this morning. I had to go drop my parents off for their bus trip and so I didn’t have time to fool with it any more than pushing the reset button on the DSL modem, which did not work. I figured the outage was still going on.
I got home at lunch and tried resetting the modem and rebooting my computer numerous times, to no effect. I finally got through to a real live person (whom I believe to be in India). After establishing that I had completed all of the preliminary steps, she directed me to a particular numerical web address, and when I put that in I immediately got a login screen. I’m still not sure what happened — I guess somehow the settings that are saved in the modem or on the computer were deleted during the outage, perhaps even by me while I was trying to figure out what was wrong.
So I’m back on line now, which is a good thing, in case I need to do any web site uploading or updating from home during our election coverage tonight.
