I do, Regis. I do!
“Who Wants To Be A Millionaire” celebrates its 10th anniversary in the U.S. this year with some special prime-time episodes which air in August, hosted by Regis Philbin.
Some of the contestants will be chosen by a contestant interview process. Interviews were held in Nashville a few weeks ago, but I had to work and couldn’t make it — and, besides, I’d tried out at a contestant interview back in the show’s heyday and been rejected.
But happily, the show is also bringing back the telephone qualifying game to select some of the contestants. I just played — and, shockingly, I got all five of the qualifying questions right, which puts me in a big pool from which some players will be selected at random. You pick from among the available taping dates, and there’s a different random drawing held for each date.
Unfortunately, all but one of the available taping dates will be during my Kenya trip. The only taping date that I could put myself in the pool for was Aug. 5, the day after I return from Kenya. If I were to be picked (which, remember, is a very long shot indeed) I’d have to get off the plane from Amsterdam on Aug. 4 and, I presume, immediately fly to New York for the taping the next day. (Unlike most other game shows, ABC does fly “Millionaire” contestants to New York and put them up in a hotel.)
I will find out whether I’ve been chosen on July 20, just two days before I leave on the Kenya trip.
Remember, this would be like winning the lottery. Millions of people will probably play the telephone game, and many many thousands will get all the questions right and qualify for the drawing. So I’m not holding my breath.
Still, it’s fun to dream….
