I suspect I am behind the curve in seeing and commenting on the Susan Boyle video. I didn’t see it until late this afternoon. But at the risk of being behind the times, I’ve got to comment on it anyway.
If you have not seen the video, I will set it up for you and you can go and see it (most of the versions I’ve found on YouTube have embedding disabled, for some reason). “Britain’s Got Talent” is basically the same show as “America’s Got Talent,” which aired on NBC. Both shows were created and executive-produced by “American Idol” judge Simon Cowell. Here in America, Cowell’s contract with Fox restricts his appearances on other shows, but he’s a judge on “Britain’s Got Talent,” apparently with the same snark he displays each week on “American Idol.”
Susan Boyle, an unemployed 47-year-old woman with a dream of singing, appeared on the show, and this happened. Listen for the snark, bordering on contempt, when Simon asks why Boyle hadn’t had any success in the past, but then watch carefully for the look of utter shock on Simon’s face when …. well, I won’t spoil it.
I will be 47 next month, and lately, for reasons I can’t really discuss fully in this forum, I’ve been feeling like a failure in life, socially, financially, physically and vocationally. So I have to say I resonated with the whole story of this unassuming woman walking out on stage and getting the response she got.
Good on her. She gives the rest of us hope.
