Real uncle, dutch grandparent

Uncle John

Uncle John

You may have heard the term “dutch uncle” for a family friend who isn’t technically related but who feels like he ought to be a part of the family.

Well, today and tomorrow, I’m a “dutch grandfather” for my nephews.

The elementary school they attend has “grandparents’ day” each year, but my parents weren’t able to attend this year. So, on relatively short notice, my sister-in-law suggested that Uncle John attend instead. I went and got to have lunch with my kindergarten nephew today, and will do the same tomorrow with the third-grader. They serve lunch in the gym to accomodate all the guests, and then the kids all do a song. There’s also a book fair in the library, with the hope that grandma and grandpa will drop a few bucks. :)

The kindergartener revealed to me today that he has three girlfriends. He’s a playa, for sure.
