Pocketful of miracles

By this time next week, knock on wood, I’ll have a DVR and a more elegant way of handling two TV shows I want to watch at the same time. (My VCR broke a few months back.) But tonight, I’ve been switching back and forth between “The Miracle of Morgan’s Creek” and the miracle of Thompson-Boling Arena, as Pat Summitt won her 1,000th game as coach of the University of Tennessee women’s basketball team. (No other women’s basketball program, much less coach, has 1,000 wins.)

The game is over, now, just in time to let me see the ending of one of the funniest movies ever made.

    I may be wrong , but I think you can cut the word “women's” out of that next to last sentence and it would be even more accurate. I heard her on the radio yesterday morning, and I do believe they mentioned that she has coached more winning games than any basketball coach, regardless of the gender of the players or the coach.
    (Sorry, I'm a little sensitive to the “pretty good for a girl” syndrome. It's good, and they're girls.)

    She has definitely won more games than any other coach of either gender.
    (Bobby Knight is the leader among men's college coaches, with 902.) But I'm
    not sure about whether she's won more games than any men's *program*, simply
    because men's basketball programs and statistics go back farther, into the
    days when women weren't afforded the same opportunities for competitive
    sports. The sentence in question was comparing her *individual* record to
    everybody else's *program* record, which I thought was a pretty impressive
    comparison. I didn't mean to damn anyone with faint praise.

    North Carolina, for example, has an overall win count of 1,950, but that goes back to 1910, long before women's college basketball would have been a factor.
