I just saw a preview for Monday night’s “Two and a Half Men,” and I think I’m going to have to watch it, so that I can see … John Carney.

I’ve never actually seen Carney perform, only photos of him on his web site. I’ve posted before about people with whom I share a name, including Carney the magaician, as well as:

  • An NFL kicker;
  • The immediate past lieutenant governor of Delaware, who — after losing an election for governor last year — was strongly considered to replace Joe Biden in the Senate;
  • A St. Louis radio personality — whose father was named Jack and was an even better-known radio personality. This one is particularly funny because my father goes by Jack and both of us have worked in local radio at one time or another.
  • A district attorney in northern Middle Tennessee.

I’m not related to any of the other John Carneys in any way I know of. (Way back, of course, we’re probably all related somehow.)

Anyway, the “Two and a Half Men” episode apparently deals with Jon Cryer’s character having a birthday. In the promo, Cryer is shown saying something about wanting a magician at his party, and then I caught a glimpse of John Carney holding up playing cards as if doing a trick. I recognized John Carney immediately from his web site photos and caricatures.

As I said, I’ll have to tune in Monday and see him.

    Don't forget John Carney, writer and director of the 2006 surprise movie hit “Once”.

    Hey John, remember me? The ORU Alumni newsletter put me on the webtrail of your site. How've things been these 25+ years?

    Wow — talk about a blast from the past! How are you? What are you up to?

    For a year or so after graduation, I killed time at a radio station in
    Oklahoma, thinking that I was going to get into scriptwriting working for a
    husband and wife who had been professors of mine at ORU. That fell through,
    I moved home to Tennessee, and I've been with the local newspaper ever
    since. I'm active in foreign short-term mission trips — that's what the
    self-published novel is about — and I'm a certified United Methodist lay
    speaker, meaning I sometimes substitute as a preacher when an ordained
    minister is unavailable. I'm about to start rehearsals for a community
    theater play. Pretty dull life, huh?
