I happened to think today about “Dave Allen At Large,” a British comedy show, combining sketch comedy elements with the (seated) standup comedy of its very Irish creator and host. I can’t recall what station aired this program here in Tennessee, but I must have seen it in the late 70s or perhaps in the early 80s (although I seem to recall watching it here, not at college in Oklahoma). I went to YouTube to find a clip — and, of course, there were plenty of them. What’s geeky about that is that I wanted, in part, to see the jazzy, ultimate-70s opening credits.
Anyway, here’s a clip which includes a few sketches, plus those credits:
I was kind of sad to see the reference in Wikipedia to Allen’s atheism. I remember him mocking certain aspects of religion, of course — but you certainly don’t have to be an atheist to do that. And his signoff, as Wikipedia notes, was “Good night, and may your God go with you.”
