What’s in a name?
Joseph Biden had already qualified to run for re-election to his Delaware senate seat before he was picked as Barack Obama’s running mate, and he will remain on the ballot in that capacity.
According to Wikipedia, if he is elected to both positions, he would of course decline the Senate seat, and the governor of Delaware, Ruth Ann Minner, would appoint someone to serve for the next two years, until a special election. That appointee might be Biden’s son Beau, who introduced his father at the convention this week. But if Beau Biden’s National Guard service in Iraq makes that inappropriate, Wikipedia suggests that the governor might instead appoint whichever candidate loses the Democratic primary for governor next month. There are two candidates, one of whom is the lieutenant governor of Delaware, the honorable John Carney. He’s no relation, but it might make for some fun newspaper headlines, bumper stickers, etc., for me to collect.
As I’ve posted here before, there’s also an NFL kicker named John Carney, as well as a magician and a St. Louis radio host. The St. Louis radio John Carney is of particular interest to me — and I swapped e-mail with him some years back — because he is the son of a legendary St. Louis broadcaster who was named Jack Carney. Well, my father is named Jack, and both of us have worked in small-town radio at some point in our careers!
A bit closer to home, there’s a district attorney in Clarksville named John Carney — no relation. I’ve met several friends of his; one of our former circuit judges here in Bedford County had served alongside that John Carney as a TBI agent. At one point, that John Carney was in line to become director of the TBI.
