Making culture

I saw an ad the other day for the book “Culture Making,” by Andy Crouch, and was immediately intrigued; I’ve been meaning to shop for it. Today, my issue of Christianity Today arrived, complete with an excerpt from the book and a brief interview with Crouch, and I think I’m going to have to get this book.

The excerpt talks about various Christian responses to culture as both “gestures” — a specific action for a specific purpose — and “postures.” There are times when the gesture of condemning culture is necessary and appropriate, but when the church is known only for a full-time posture of reaction and condemnation, it can overshadow the positive and redemptive nature of God’s message. Instead, Crouch notes the importance of changing culture through positive and pro-active methods, as “artists and gardeners,” as he puts it.

If the rest of the book is as good as the excerpt, it will be well worth my time.
