Gone gone gone

I once read a book about classic Hollywood which compared two of Fred Astaire’s co-stars, saying that while one was perhaps the more skilled dancer, the other one brought out Astaire’s “gladness of talent.” I like that phrase. I think that’s what I like about this video. Is it a goofy video? Certainly it is! Does it seem like a frivolous departure for the queen of bluegrass and a rock god? Absolutely. But I fell in love with it the first time I saw it. It’s an infectious pop tune, irresistible on its own, but the video shows what a great time these two are having as collaborators. The smiles seem like real smiles, not stage directions. “Gladness of talent” is all over the place. (Well, T-Bone Burnett looks kind of serious, but that’s just T-Bone Burnett.)

The song itself, I like. The video is a different story…
