Craig, citizen

I watched last night’s episode of “The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson,” and it was both funny and touching. The cold open was footage of Craig, during the citizenship ceremony, saying the Pledge of Allegiance (the actual citizenship oath was shown, too, but later in the show). Ferguson revealed that his employer, David Letterman, sent him an assortment of fine aged beef from Lobell’s as a gift to celebrate the occasion (Letterman used to brag on Lobell’s whenever he would play “Know Your Cuts of Meat” with the studio audience on his own show. Don’t ask.) He also announced that he’s been chosen to speak at this year’s White House Correspondents’ Dinner, and joked that it’s now too late for President Bush to deport him if he gives offense that night.

His new citizenship really does seem to mean something to Ferguson, and I think that’s nice — especially on a day like today when many of us are exercising our rights under American democracy.
