Day 5: 7,700 words

I am not making this word count up, as Dave Barry would say, nor did I do it on purpose. The word count feature in OpenOffice showed 7,700 exactly when I stopped writing just now.

I should be at about 8,333 or so after five days of writing. But I’m not far behind, and I’m continuing to make progress.

Much of the novel so far hasn’t involved much creative plotting on my part — I’m still drawing heavily on my own first impressions of Africa in 2004. But I want to start extending a subplot that I’ve hinted at, and then there are some plots I haven’t yet been able to set in motion because my characters aren’t yet at their immediate destination.

I’m still struggling with trying to rein in my exposition. These are places and situations that are dear to me, and the journalist in me wants to journal, when sometimes the reader might not be as interested in the minutiae as I am. But that’s second-guessing, and second-guessing isn’t allowed this month. Second-guessing is for next month, or perhaps March.

But I’m having fun so far, which is what counts.

  • I cannot believe you have that many words in you ;). I'm VERY impressed...I keep thinking that someday I'd like to write a novel, but am not creative that way. I'm really enjoying hearing about yours! :)
