We’re number two — we have to try harder

I took a second place award today in the Tennessee Associated Press Managing Editors’ contest. I was second place in Division III (circulation under 10,000) in local features, for a feature I wrote last December about World War II veteran James Brandon.

The T-G did quite well in the TAPME awards, but not as well in the University of Tennessee / Tennessee Press Association awards, which were also given out today. Part of the reason is that the groups have different size classifications. Our circulation is about 7,000, which makes us among the bigger newspapers in our TAPME division. But in TPA, we’re in a division with daily papers of 25,000 circulation or less, which means we’re competing with newspapers two or three times our size.
