Spike, but not the channel or the filmmaker

With Saturday Night Live in reruns, and not airing at all this week due to some wrestling dreck, I took the chance to check out something I’d been meaning to see for months: Talk Show with Spike Feresten. Feresten is a former writer for David Letterman and Jerry Seinfeld, and his half-hour show follows “Mad TV” each week on the FOX network.

Funny stuff — sure, some things seem derivative of Letterman or Conan O’Brien, but Feresten is likable and that counts for a lot. It’s hard to break too much truly new ground in the genre at this point.

Feresten needs more than a half hour a week. I may go and watch some of his stuff on the web site.
