Hello, Mr. Chips

Well, last night Claudia House sent me my lesson plan for Monday. I will be, as I mentioned in a previous post, substitute teaching for Claudia as part of a Teacher Appreciation Week observance by our local school board. I will write a first-person story about the experience for the newspaper.

Of course, I have the luxury of days to prepare for my time in the classroom. I thought last night about the fact that Claudia has to get ready to teach every 24 hours.

The Advanced Placement classes are discussing satire, so I will bring my experience with The Wittenburg Door into play. For the regular senior English classes, she’s encouraged me to talk about my experience as a writer, about my trips abroad over the past few years, and so on.

Claudia’s planning period is at the end of the day, and I don’t need to stick around for that, obviously, so I will leave by 2 p.m. I will then head directly to our not-yet-opened Chili’s restaurant, where (thanks to our Chamber of Commerce executive) I have an invitation to partake in one of those free meals that restaurants sometimes serve while training their staff. By then, I think I will be ready to sit down and enjoy a meal.
