Sophomore improvement

As I posted last week, I enjoyed last week’s back-to-back premiere episodes of “Thank God You’re Here.” Not everyone found it funny, however. Others complained because it violated long-standing rules of live improv — which I, as a viewer and not an improv performer, couldn’t care less about.

Anyway, I can definitely say that tonight’s episode was better than either of last week’s. It started with Harland Williams, who appeared to be trying to throw the improv troupe off of their prepared script and whose devil-may-care attitude was just what the show needed. And Jane Lynch, like Jennifer Coolidge from last week, is a veteran of Christopher Guest’s largely-improvised movies, so she had no problems whatsoever.

Jason Alexander was not as funny as Williams or Lynch — or perhaps it’s just that NBC, by flogging his segment relentlessly in the promo, took away the impact of his best lines. Brian Posehn just seemed uncomfortable, although even he got a few good lines. The “all-in” sketch, still the weakest part of the show, wasn’t as bad as last week.

The set-up sketches seemed better structured this week; they seemed to involve a lot of set-up questions which gave the performers easy opportunity for funny ad-libs.

All in all, a definite improvement. The show will air again on Wednesday, which will be its regular time slot from here on out.

    There are rules for improv?

    Doesn’t that defeat the purpose?
