Must-see movie of 2008

OK. So I was blogging earlier today about stage productions of the Sondheim musical “Sweeney Todd.”

I now discover that there will be a film version of said musical coming out in January of next year.

Directed by … wait for it … Tim Burton.

Johnny Depp will play Sweeney Todd (Johnny Depp in a Tim Burton movie? What a shock!) with Helena Bonham Carter as Mrs. Lovett and Alan Rickman as Judge Turpin. (Sacha Baron Cohen is even in it!)

This is either going to be really, really good or really, really bad, and in either case it’s a must-see. Even Tim Burton’s flops are interesting in their own way. I can certainly see Johnny Depp acting the role, but I can’t imagine him singing the songs, after becoming accustomed to George Hearn’s deep voice. I wonder if they’ll dub him?

Oh way cool! I think I’m more excited about seeing Alan Rickman as the judge than anything! What an interesting cast!

I love the “original” Sweeney with Angela Lansbury, and my college theater group did it proud back in the 80s (my first exposure to it).
