I’m no Saint

The NFL kicker John Carney (no relation) was cut by the New Orleans Saints this week, and so it’s possible that someone will stumble across this blog while looking for information about him.

The only Titans game I’ve watched in person was during one of their seasons as the Tennessee Oilers. They were playing at Vanderbilt while waiting for the Coliseum (now LP Field) to be completed. I went to the season-opening game against the Chargers, in part because John Carney was kicking for the Chargers and I thought it might be fun to see him in action.

There are several other John Carneys of note, including a St. Louis radio personality and a comedian/magician. I was startled once when watching one of my favorite shows, the late, great “Mystery Science Theater 3000,” to see a John Carney listed as one of the writers; I think it may have been the comedian.

Here in Middle Tennessee, the district attorney for the Clarksville area is John Carney. Our former circuit judge here in Bedford County, Charles Lee, knew that John Carney when they were both TBI agents.

And, as I’ve posted here before, the lieutenant governor of Delaware is named John Carney; I once wrote and asked his campaign for a bumper sticker, which they were kind enough to send me.

Anyway, kicker John Carney, I’m sure all of the rest of the John Carneys are pulling for you to find another team, or, failing that, perhaps a job in the broadcast booth somewhere.

Maybe John in St. Louis can help.

I don’t think they’ve been in any trouble lately, but I will admit I did a double take when I saw the name in the story.
