The secret ham of Food Network

When “Ham on the Street,” hosted by George Duran, first appeared on Food Network, I posted to a TV discussion group that I thought it should have been paired on the schedule with “Good Eats,” because Alton Brown and Duran both have similar senses of humor, similar knowledge of food, and a similar love of quirky and unusual gadgets or cooking methods. Someone responded that “Ham on the Street” would be a much better match for “The Secret Life Of …” because of the ways in which the hosts interact with the public. I hated that comparison, because Jim O’Connor always seemed kind of annoying to me, and besides, he was an actor and TV personality rather than a chef or food expert.

Well, Food Network has begun running ads for a new season of “The Secret Life Of …”, which will now be hosted, not by O’Connor, but by — you guessed it — George Duran. Apparently, Food Network has decided to, in effect, combine the two shows by plugging Duran’s wit and knowledge into O’Connor’s format.

I guess I was wrong after all.
