Criticizing the critic

Tom Shales, Feb. 19:

Could it be that at long last, late-night king David Letterman is getting fed up with the zany inanities, forced cackled laughter and imbecilic interruptions of his long-time bandleader Paul Shaffer?

Tom Shales, March 19:

[O]n some nights, Letterman seems more interested in relating to his babbling bandleader, Paul Shaffer, than to we folks at home in television land, excluding the audience rather than taking it into his confidence.

Which is it, Tom? Is Letterman “getting fed up with” Paul Shaffer interrupting him, or is Letterman “more interested in relating to … Shaffer than to we folks at home”? Because to me, it sounds like the two are mutually exclusive and you’re just looking for something to gripe about.
