Mr. Melman is not an attorney

If David Letterman had not taken sick yesterday, he would likely have spent part of last night’s show paying tribute to Calvert DeForest, a/k/a Larry “Bud” Melman, whose death was announced this week. Tonight’s show was taped on Monday, and Thursday and Friday will be reruns due to the En-See-Double-A tournament. So Dave will presumably say something on Monday.

Calvert DeForest was the [non-]actor’s real name; Larry “Bud” Melman was a character name, and when Dave moved from NBC to CBS, the show lost the rights to use it as a result of a heated “intellectual property” dispute between Dave and his former bosses.

Aw man, I recall Larry Bud Melman fondly. I didn’t even realize he was still living… I mean that he had been alive… before he passed, Oh you know what I mean…
