The Kimmelcast

As you may recall, my brother and I stood for two hours in the stand-by audience line for “Jimmy Kimmel Live” last Friday but failed to get in.

The ABC affiliate in Nashville delays Kimmel an hour past the network feed, and so I never watch him live, and it occurred to me that I hadn’t seen the show in ages (I think the prime-time anniversary special was the last time I actually saw it). So I set my VCR yesterday and watched a little of last night’s episode while getting ready for work this morning.

Pretty funny stuff. As I saw last Friday, there are scores of costumed characters who wander Hollywood Boulevard, posing for photos with tourists. For Wednesday’s show, in honor of Valentine’s Day, Kimmel picked a woman out of his studio audience and played a sort of “Dating Game” parody in which she got to ask questions of several (temporarily unmasked) costumed performers whom the show had gathered together outside the theatre. It’s likely these were the exact same performers we’d seen while waiting in line Friday.

I was a little surprised that one of the characters was Chewbacca; my brother told me there had been a major news story a week or two earlier about a Chewbacca impersonator (not the one participating in Kimmel’s sketch, obviously) attacking a tour guide.

The contestant chose “Batman,” and the show gave them a tongue-in-cheek Valentine’s “date” in which they stood in front of a blue chromakey screen and seemed to be visiting various locations.

As for the actual episode I missed seeing Friday night, the one with Tenacious D, a reader of this blog has generously offered to burn a DVD from her TiVo so that I can see what I missed.

The general manager of the ABC station here has a blog; maybe I should go pester him about moving Kimmel up to a more decent hour.
