In the words of Emily Litella, ‘Never mind….’

Jay Davis is my dentist, and a member of my Sunday School class, and vice-president of our church men’s club, for which I am secretary.

Last Thursday, while the men’s club was catering a clergy dinner, Jay was cracking some eggs. He dropped one on the floor by mistake. As he wiped it up, he made a joke to me about how the floor was a lot shinier where the egg had been.

My response: “New Shimmer is a floor wax and a dessert topping!”

Jay looked at me blankly. It was obvious he had no earthly idea what I was talking about, and suddenly I felt old.

I don’t know Jay’s exact age, but he was surely in diapers when “NBC’s Saturday Night” premiered.

Today, I was reading Aaron Barnhart’s column about the first season DVD box set of the show which eventually became known as “Saturday Night Live.” Aaron mentioned Shimmer and its amazing properties, and I didn’t feel quite as dated.

I recall reading on Lorne Michaels‘ personal site just a year or two his contention that there would never be full-season boxed sets of SNL. The music rights issues were just too complex — since the original performances were before the days of home video, no one would have thought to negotiate for the rights to release those great musical performances on DVD. It may well be that such issues will keep some future seasons from being released. But at least they’ve been able to work them out for the first season. I’d love to own this boxed set at some point, but right now I’ll do well to finish my Christmas shopping.

For what it’s worth, John, I used that exact same line from SNL just a few days ago and got the same blank stare in response. Sigh…
