God only knows what they were thinking

It is one thing for Madison Avenue to use a classic song in a TV commercial. But it’s another thing for them to ruin it.

“God Only Knows,” one of Brian Wilson’s most beautiful and lilting compositions for the Beach Boys, is now being used in a commercial promoting the fact that Sam’s Club now accepts MasterCard. So I’m not sure which company to blame. The commercial is idiotic — it just features people smiling stupidly, directly into the camera, while standing next to products they bought at Sam’s Club.

Pardon me while I gnash my teeth.
