Bad time for a fast

As soon as I left work, about 3 p.m., I headed to church to help cook for the Murfreesboro District UMC clergy dinner. Our men’s club was, as always, working under the direction of Andy Borders, and the food was, as always, delicious.

At least, what I tasted was delicious.

You see, I knew that we’d get a chance to sample Andy’s wares after everything else was over — the kitchen crew would sit down for a meal once our crowd had dispersed. But it didn’t occur to me until today that I have blood work tomorrow in preparation for a routine physical next week.

This means I’m not supposed to have anything to eat or (except water) to drink after 6 this evening. I decided to fudge and eat until 7, but that still would not accommodate our after-banquet meal.

When we had some down time, I nibbled on some of our excess crackers. I also got to knock down a cup of the delicious tomato Florentine soup which we prepared as the first course. But I didn’t get any chicken cordon bleu, or green beans, or cheesy potato casserole, or that delicious-looking layered ice cream dessert.

As the crew was dishing up dessert and starting to wash the dinner dishes, we seemed to have plenty of help. My back was hurting from having been on my feet so long, and seeing the dessert was making me hungry. So I decided to go ahead and slip out.

My one regret in this regard is that I didn’t get the chance to go out into the dining room and say hello to Auntie Em and scold her for not having blogged in several months. We did get to wave at each other at one point.
