This blog post deserves an award

Attention Faith, Kanye and now LeAnn:

No one — ever — deserves or has “earned” an entertainment award. Such awards are completely subjective, completely dependent on the taste, judgement and preferences of whatever group votes on the award. If the CMA wants to give Entertainer of the Year to Ozzy Osbourne and Song of the Year to the Oscar Meyer weiner jingle, they have every right to do so. If you don’t like it, you don’t have to be a member of the organization, you don’t have to attend the awards ceremony, and I assume you have some recourse to keep your name off the ballot. Otherwise, keep your big trap shut and don’t be a sore loser. All three of you have reached a level of show business that rewards you handsomely for your talents, even if you never receive an award. It may be a cliché, but it’s also the truth: it really is an honor just to be nominated.

Oh, and while we’re at it, I’m sick of people whining whenever the director of the Best Picture doesn’t also get the nod for Best Director. If the presumption is that one automatically guarantees the other, why bother having two different categories?

The fact of the matter is that it’s entirely possible for Best Picture and Best Director to be different. Director A, blessed with a cast of fine actors and a compelling story, may have had little to do except yell “CUT!”, while Director B may have had to work with scraps and yet elevated his material to almost the top of the heap. And, again, the difference between the winner of a category and the second place finisher (we never know who finishes second, of course, but you get the idea) may be razor thin, so — once again — it’s not a slap in the face if you don’t win. Take your $20,000 gift basket home and shut up about it.

Yeah, what you said! I’ve long been shocked that entertainers make millions, while teachers scrape by. So you didn’t get an award? Suck it up!
