1 vs. 100

It’s been a long week, and for some reason I’m just really tired tonight. Even my mother remarked that I looked tired when I was over at my parents’ house this evening.

So, in spite of my raving about “Battlestar Galactica” (which I stand behind), I wasn’t in a mood for heavy drama tonight. So I taped BSG and watched the premiere of NBC’s new game show, “1 vs. 100.” I’m also a game show wonk, of course, and this was a fun one.

Each contestant tries to win increasing amounts of money by answering multiple choice questions which are also being given to “the mob” — an opposing team of 100 players, including some specially-selected by the producers for their expertise. (Tonight’s mob included Jeopardy uber-champion Ken Jennings.) The contestant earns money each time a member of the mob answers a question incorrectly and is eliminated from the game. But that’s only if the contestant gets the question right; one wrong answer and the contestant is eliminated, with the remaining members of the mob dividing his winnings among themselves.

Not unlike “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire,” the contestant must decide at each step whether to take his winnings and go home or whether to risk it all and continue. After each question, the dollar value per eliminated mob member increases, making it tempting to continue.

It seems like addictive fun.

By the way, I got home from my parents’ midway through tonight’s “Doctor Who,” so I haven’t seen that either. (I’m taping the late rebroadcast.) I believe tonight’s episode features cameos by a couple of characters — one of them a robotic canine — from the Doctor’s past.

I enjoyed 1 vs. 100 as well but felt the questions were a bit too pop culture oriented … seems to kind of defeat the purpose of having seven Mensa members, seven brain surgeons, Ken Jennings, etc. in the mob. But this may be the only way to give “the one” a real chance to rack up the money. Battlestar Galactica … best show on television. Hands down.
