What’s a few billion between friends?

Here’s a great analysis piece on the Gates Foundation and Warren Buffett’s announcement this week that he is giving much of his fortune to it.

One factual quibble: Bill Gates did not, as the writer states, drop out of Harvard to write MS-DOS. He dropped out to found Microsoft, years before the company got involved with IBM. And he didn’t write the original MS-DOS program.

If you recall the story, IBM came to Microsoft looking for an operating system, but operating systems were not Microsoft’s forte at the time, so they quietly licensed one from a third party, Seattle Computer Products, without telling them of IBM’s involvement.

Nerd folklore aside, the article has some great information about what the Gates Foundation is doing.
