Because my new digital camera is so small, I can take it with me more easily. While arriving at Bedford County Courthouse to cover a meeting tonight, I made this shot of the veterans’ memorial which was unveiled last March. The sculpture was created by Bell Buckle sculptor Russ Faxon.
It was paid for by the sale of inscribed bricks which form the plaza surrounding the statue. The United Veterans Council has praised the Times-Gazette for its role in the process. Brick sales were going very slowly until the T-G agreed, as a public service, to publish a photo of each veteran after a brick was purchased. This was just the incentive that was needed to get the ball rolling.
The statue was unveiled three months ago, and people are still buying bricks and bringing photos of their loved ones to the newspaper. We could not be more proud to have been a part of this.
