Congratulations are in order
When I first started going to Shelbyville First UMC, some years back, the main reason I chose my Sunday School class was that our associate pastor, David Adams, was teaching it. I’d already become familiar with David through newspaper stuff and other contacts, and I looked forward to learning from him.
Two weeks — two weeks! — after I started at FUMC, we received news that David was being transferred to Monterey, up near Cookeville. It was two or three months before he actually left, of course, but the timing was still frustrating.
Later, David was transferred to Lynchburg First UMC, where he’s had much success.
Today, I learned that David has been appointed general secretary of the General Commission on United Methodist Men, the chartering body for thousands of men’s fellowships at United Methodist churches worldwide. They could not have gotten anyone better for the job.
The interim general secretary, who has been serving in the post and whom I assume will continue until David takes office this summer, is another clergyman whom I love and admire: the Rev. William Morris, our former bishop.

I saw Tom Nankervis and wanted to thank him for all he’s done helping to publicize Mountain T.O.P. in the Tennessee Conference Review, but I never got the chance to speak to him. I know that my own pastor, Lloyd Doyle, had been at conference earlier in the day; if he was there tonight, I didn’t see him. That’s possible, though; Murfreesboro First UMC has quite a large sanctuary. [...]
