The Domino effect

I had a hankering for pizza tonight.

I remain amazed that Domino’s Pizza has lagged so far behind Pizza Hut and Papa John’s in online ordering. Pizza Hut and Papa John’s both have great online ordering sites, while Domino’s has no online ordering at all — at least, not as a nationwide program, and not in my town. Perhaps some individual franchisees or stores have online ordering.

I like ordering pizza online. You can look at the specials and take your time deciding on crust and toppings. Or, if you’re the predictable type, either Pizza Hut or Papa John’s saves your last order, so you can quickly demand “the usual.”

Over the several years, 90 percent of my pizza business has gone to Pizza Hut or Papa John’s just because I like ordering online. I realize I’m probably in the minority, but if it’s a sizable minority Domino’s is still missing out on a heck of a lot of business. In this particular area, they are literally years behind their two biggest competitors.

Actually, all three chains missed out on my business tonight. None of the specials caught my eye, and I ended up going to the grocery store — initially in search of frozen pizza, but then I wound up buying hamburger fixings.
