thomas merton is a great writer on the principles of silence. to note, a vow of silence is not a general vow within the monastic tradition, it’s taken on by those who feel a bit more radical. but, rich, is right in sharing that we fill our lives with so much. merton would say we do that because it’s sometimes scary to be alone with God in silence and find out who one truly is.
