Thrilling finish
The Vanderbilt Commodores, the traditional laughingstock of the Southeastern Conference, have been having a remarkable season — they were 4-0 and had the chance tonight to go 5-0 for the first time since 1942. Middle Tennessee State University, which only went to I-A a few years back, was 0-3 and struggling.
They played tonight. MTSU led the whole game, but Vanderbilt — which had come from behind on several of its wins this season — was within striking distance, down 17-15. Then, with about two minutes left, Vanderbilt got the ball on its own one-foot line. Vandy quarterback Jay Cutler led a masterful campaign down the field and into field goal range, with just five seconds left.
The field goal was blocked! MTSU fell on the ball as the final second ticked off the clock.
One of the most exciting finishes to a football game I’ve seen in quite a while.
