How to Reheat Leftovers

I’ve gotten three comments in the past month on a blog post I made back in June! My posts are archived and searchable, so if you were doing a Google search for such-and-such a topic, and if I happened to post on that topic at some point, you have a chance of stumbling onto my old post. But to receive several responses to the same old post in a relatively-short period of time is unusual. Perhaps someone linked to or mentioned my post on a message board somewhere.

Anyway, the post in question had to do with the Food Network program “How To Boil Water.” That title goes back quite a while, but my primary topic was the current incarnation of the show, which began a couple of years ago. It was originally hosted by Frederic von Coppernolle and standup comic Lynne Koplitz, with the premise being that von Coppernolle, a French chef, was teaching Koplitz how to cook. Suddenly, Koplitz was replaced by Jack Hourigan, another female standup comic. At first I didn’t like her, but eventually I came to prefer her to Koplitz.

At the time of my June post, another sudden change had been made — von Coppernolle had been replaced by Food Network workhorse Tyler Florence. I’d only seen one episode of the new version and didn’t like it. Florence, who up until that point had worked solo, seemed to be treating Hourigan like one of the viewer guests on his previous instructional show, “Food 911,” rather than as a co-host, and therefore there didn’t seem to be any chemistry between them.

Well, I shouldn’t have made a negative judgement like that based on one episode; Florence and Hourigan eventually developed some chemistry, and I like the show much better now than I did after that first episode. Even so, if you pin me to the wall I think I’d have to say I prefer the von Coppernolle / Hourigan version.

Anyway, a New York Magazine article has raised a question about whether Food Network is now deliberately avoiding French chefs like von Coppernolle in favor of all-American cooks like Tyler Florence and Rachael Ray (who, between them, now seem to occupy about 75 percent of the network’s schedule).

I’ll look for your comments on this post tomorrow — or eight months from now, as the case may be. :)

The only reason I stumbled across this website is because I was watching the Food Network this morning (12/11/2005) and “How to Boil Water” was on with the original Von Coppernolle and Hourgan duo. Since Von Coppernolle isn’t on anymore, I forgot about him until this morning. So I googled him and it brought me here. I used to like the show with Von Coppernolle and Hourigan, but now I never watch it as I don’t like the Florence/Hourigan combo… just as you stated previously. I agree with your statement about T.F. in the earlier shows… I felt he treated J.H. like a child and I stopped watching it because him. I’m not impressed with his dialog with Hourigan or anyone else for that matter, although I’m not big on listening to someone consistently uses word-fillers like “mm-kay?” at the end of every sentence. Every once in a while on Sunday mornings I’ll watch a few minutes to see what they’re making, but as a whole I think the show bombed when Von Coppernolle was no longer on, and what’s even worse is that he never appeared on any other show. And up until now, I hadn’t thought about how I used to love to watch wolfgang puck and I haven’t seen him since the first Iron Chef America. What is going on over at the Food Network? I’m very disappointed.
