Craig (not Craiggers)

I don’t stay up late enough to watch CBS’s “The Late Late Show,” especially since the CBS affiliate in Nashville delays it by half an hour, from 11:35 Central time to 12:05. So I missed Scottish actor and comic Craig Ferguson’s appearances last fall as guest host, when CBS was trying out potential successors to Craig Kilborn.

But I made a point of taping the first official episode of “The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson” Monday night, and I watched half of it this morning before leaving for work. I have to say, Ferguson seems like a natural — relaxed and funny, professional enough to stay on target while loose enough to react to the unexpected. I may have to tape the show more often. You really didn’t get to see his personality when he played the stuffy, self-centered boss on “The Drew Carey Show.”

Of course, David Duchovny was his first guest, which helps. Duchovny has a great sense of humor and (as any fan of “The Larry Sanders Show” knows) isn’t afraid to poke fun at himself. I really want to see the second half of the show. Nicole Sullivan of “Mad TV” and “The King of Queens” was to be the second guest, and Ferguson admitted during the monologue that Sullivan was the first woman with whom he went out, once, after arriving in L.A. — and that he hadn’t seen her since.
