Visit beautiful Kenya
I had finished writing an earlier version of this post last night, but my computer shut off before I could hit the “publish” button and I didn’t feel like fighting it at that point in the evening.
My Wednesday night Mountain T.O.P. Youth Service Ministry (YSM) camp visit went well again this week. When introducing myself to the camps this summer, I sometimes mention in passing that I am unable to be a camper this summer because of my upcoming trip to Kenya. Last night, one of the adult campers came up to me afterward to tell me that she’d gone on a mission trip to Kenya a few months back. She worked in a Nairobi slum, although not the same slum in which I’ll be working, and her group was affiliated with a mission started by Mother Teresa. She said it was one of the most moving experiences of her life and predicted I would be blessed. She also, without me asking about it, went to great pains to reassure me about the State Department warning. She said her group was in Kenya while some sort of terrorism trial was taking place in America, and yet they felt no threat whatsoever. She said the Kenyans are somewhat dismayed at the warning, because they depend so heavily on tourism (safaris).
I was a little melancholy driving home from the evening because I realized that I had missed the last of the three Wednesday night cookouts at Mountain T.O.P. Adults In Ministry (AIM) camps. This is the first summer since 1993 that I haven’t been an AIM camper, and I’d been attending both the second and third AIM weeks since 1998. AIM discourages friends and family from dropping in for camp visits, but Mountain T.O.P. board members can attend the Wednesday night cookout in their official capacity, and it would have been a great opportunity to catch up with many of my friends.
